What started out as a chance to study abroad before going to college in the fall and taking a chance at having a summer fling; ended up falling down the well, literally. When an old prophecy says that a human girl will be re-born vampire and bring death to the entire vampire race, Axelia (Zee) must find a way to survive.



Justification for Nomination
What Kills Mestarts out with the prophecy that dated back to the vampire’s ancients. Zee is seventeen and studying in Italy before college. She meets a boy who had the looks and someone that was the great summer fling her friend encouraged her to have. But all goes wrong when she goes out past curfew and finds out that her guy she wanted the summer fling with was a vampire and wanted to kill her. She falls into a well and gets reborn into a vampire. Having brought the prophecy to life that a human girl is going to fall into the well, the entire face becomes scared that she will soon wipe out the whole vampire race. They feel that if they don’t take her down first, they will all die. Zee runs into Lucas, his father and Jerome who takes her in but soon finds out that she was being chased and to be killed. With Lucas’s father and Jerome’s sudden death, Zee only had Lucas to trust. As Zee and Lucas dodge the vampires out trying to kill them, they find every possible way to survive. In the end, Zee gives up and stops fighting in order to save Lucas’s life. The end determines the meaning of the prophecy and whether Zee survives her short period of being a vampire.

What Kills Mrelevance to teen’s experiences is the value of family. At a young age, many teens don’t feel that they are on the same page as their parents and depending on the age differences between their siblings, there could be some rivalry. This could possibly mean trying to gain their parent’s attention and acknowledgement. What kills Me really shows in the book is that usually at the end of their high school years, they start developing a relationship with their parents and see that value they are in your life. For example, in What Kills Me Zee finds that her parents still cares for her and wonder whether she was still alive when she finds a missing poster.

This week’s genre consisted on horror, supernatural, and vampire. The genre for this title was both supernatural and vampire theme. Channing showed through her book the struggles teen’s battles in order to survive in the world and being accepted. Another is that forbidden love that has yet to be kindled. There is also the vampire side of immortality.

What Kills Me moves at a fast pace and got straight to the point without it dragging on. The book was categorized as romance, but there wasn’t much romance, even though there were some scenes with it. What I also enjoyed about the book was that it was enjoyable and had me using my imagination more in order to bring out the characters and storyline. Although there was a minor disappointment towards the end where I felt that it moved too fast, it had me excited for next book.

Channing's use of the plots and character was great, though Zee personality didn’t change; it felt different than it did in the beginning. Overall, it fulfilled my imagination and enjoyment since I was rather surprise I was able to stay interested and engaged.
